2025 Job Description Red Flags: What Candidates See That You Might Not

Most companies think job descriptions are just about re-counting a role. But candidates see much more.

At any given moment, a job description is your handshake, your brand pitch, and your invitation to join a team. Yet many descriptions unintentionally send the wrong signals—driving away great candidates before you ever meet them.

Here’s what your job description might be saying without you realizing it—and how to fix it.

“We Don’t Really Know What We Want”

When job descriptions list 15+ “must-have” qualifications, candidates assume you’re disorganized, unrealistic, or unwilling to train. Especially in today’s labor market, clarity is confidence.

Fix it: Define the top 3-5 core competencies you really need. If everything is a priority, nothing is.

“We Value Titles Over Talent”

Requiring a degree or a specific number of years in a role can filter out skilled, self-taught, or nontraditional candidates with fresh ideas and proven success.

Fix it: Emphasize results over resumes. Swap “Bachelor’s degree required” with “Experience or skills that demonstrate the ability to…” when applicable.

“You’ll Be Micromanaged Here”

Bullet points like “Must be detail-oriented,” “Able to follow instructions closely,” and “Always punctual” may be intended to convey professionalism—but too many of these make candidates worry about excessive oversight.

Fix it: Balance structure with autonomy. Include phrases like “Opportunity to own your work” or “Collaborative decision-making environment.”

“We’re Boring.”

A dry, jargon-heavy job description with no flavor of the organization? Top candidates won’t bother finishing it—especially Gen Z and millennial professionals who value authenticity.

Fix it: Add a splash of personality. Let your company’s voice come through in the tone. Include something real—like a quote from a current employee, or what your team is excited about right now.

Final Thought:

Your job description is your storefront window. Make sure it invites the right people in—and gives them a reason to stay.
